A Message From Crystal Sikes

Becoming a Big was something that I considered for several years and continuously put off due to the time commitment involved. I always talked myself out of it because I was too busy with this or that and then finally it came to me that ideally there would never be a more “perfect time”. Life rarely slows down and it really should all be about the moments you create, so I decided it was time. As majority of you know, I have been a Big Sister to my Little Brother, Tayshaun for a little over a year now and it has been one of the most rewarding things that I have ever done. And the time commitment is non-existent compared to what I get out of it. Tay is a 13 year old boy who is getting ready to enter into the 8th grade at St. Vincent Seraph in OTR. He loves football, boxing, shoes, video games, writing, art, family, and gold star chili... he claims he can eat a whole coney crate. 😊 He hates to smile so naturally I try to get him to smile as much as possible and it actually is really easy. We still love playing board games and building things, but honestly our favorite thing to do is to just talk. Currently our conversations revolve on where he wants to go for high school next year, the drama with his peers, the stress around living in his neighborhood, and of course his current love interest/crush. He’s a constant reminder to me of what’s important in life and I love the growth in our relationship. So, this is where I need your help... I am fundraising for Big Brothers Big Sisters with the Over-the-Edge Event (rappelling down the side of the Westin downtown!). Every child this organization matches is given the opportunity at a life-changing friendship that brightens his or her future and is able to positively impact our community here in Cincinnati. If you would like to donate please do so here, even $5 or $10 goes directly towards matching the 400+ kids on the waiting list in the Cincinnati area. All my love, thank you!

We create life-changing friendships by matching adult mentors with  at-risk Tri-State children in need of positive role models.  We partner with parents and guardians, volunteers and others in the community, and hold ourselves accountable for each child in our program. Statistics show these Little Brothers and Sisters have higher aspirations, greater confidence, do better in school and avoid risky behaviors.
